DURHAM, N.C. — More protests are planned in Durham in the coming days as family and friends of DeAndre Marquise Ballard still have questions about his death.

Around 10:15 p.m. on Sept. 17, officers with the Durham Police Department responded to the Campus Crossings at Durham apartments, in the 1400 block of Cornwallis Road, where they found 23-year-old Ballard suffering from a gunshot wound.

Ballard, who was shot by a security guard, was transported to a local hospital, where he died. The security company says the guard shot in self-defense.

Sixteen days later, none of the family's questions has been answered.

"It definitely leaves us dumbfounded. We would think 16 days would be more than enough time for a police department to complete an investigation," said Miguel Staten, Ballard's uncle.

A 23-year-old North Carolina Central University student was shot two weeks ago at his Durham apartment complex by a security guard. The company said it was in self-defense, but students at NCCU do not believe the claims.

Staten says they want the following from police: The recording of the 911 call, the name of the security guard who shot Ballard and why he was killed.

WRAL News has also requested this information from police.

Friends and family have taken their protests to the security company, NC Detective Agency, and to downtown Durham.

Staten promises continued protests until there are answers. He says they don't believe the company's claim that the shooting was self-defense.

"We want to put his name out there so people don't forget about it and just sweep it under the rug," he said.
