NCCU student charged with assaulting classmate
Durham police charged one North Carolina Central University student with an assault on another this week for an incident that happened in a campus computer lab.
Posted — UpdatedAmy Yessalavich, who is white, said Latasha Johnson, who is black, made a series of racial comments then assaulted her, leaving her with some bruises and swelling.
Yessalavich filed a complaint with Durham police on Oct. 1, and Johnson was arrested on a charge of simple assault.
The university's Disciplinary Committee heard the case on Friday. A ruling is expected next week. In a statement, NCCU spokeswoman Cynthia Fobert said the university is committed to the safety of all its students.
