RALEIGH, N.C. — A Lenoir County woman was sentenced Friday to more than three years in prison for filing hundreds of bogus health insurance claims, authorities said.

Susan Leigh Huebotter, 60, of 912 Joshua Creek Road in Deep Run, pleaded guilty to obtaining property by false pretense and was sentenced to 44 to 65 months in prison. She also was ordered to pay $231,306.25 in restitution to Aflac Insurance Co.

According to the state Department of Insurance, Huebotter filed 287 claims for cancer treatment between 2009 and 2017 despite never being diagnosed, treated, or having surgery for cancer.

"Honest consumers pay a high price for the insurance money stolen by the dishonest insurance scammers," Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said in a statement.
