LAWNDALE, N.C. — A transgender high school student said he was recorded in the boys bathroom at a high school in western North Carolina, prompting tension and unease within the community.

Clay Sentell identifies as trans, but said he is comfortable with either pronoun. Sentell attends Burns High School in Cleveland County.

The family reported the incident to the school administration, but were not happy with the response. They were so disappointed that Clay and his sister wore signs to school asking for protection.

"Help me protect me today," the sign read in part.

A family friend addressed the school board about the incident.

"Some mothers, like Clay's mother, she can't let her son go to school and know he's going to be safe while he's there," said Annette Fain.

Clay's family says they are going to keep raising this issue until action is taken that will make trans kids feel safe at school.
