ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. — A North Carolina teen bitten last weekend by a shark took advantage of Saturday's World Oceans Day to proclaim her enduring love and respect for the ocean and to encourage others to get involved in environmental protection efforts.

"World Oceans Day is June 8th and I'd like to ask everyone to get involved however they can to protect and preserve our oceans and all the life in it. I can't wait to thank you guys and join you in saving the environment," wrote Paige Winter in a statement.

She ended it with "#SharksAreStillGoodPeople."

Winter lost part of her leg and suffered injuries to her hands when a shark attacked her at Fort Macon State Park at Atlantic Beach. She is recovering in the hospital and said she will require more surgeries.

East Carolina Brace & Limb Co. posted to Facebook that it would provide Winter with a free prosthetic leg.
