The decision opens the door for the legislature's GOP majority to draw districts that help lock in power at the statehouse, and contribute to Republican power in Congress. The state's high court also decided two long-running voting cases Friday, including one on voter ID.

A SECOND RULING MEANS YOU'LL NEED AN ACCEPTABLE PHOTO ID THE NEXT TIME THAT YOU VOTE AND THE REPUBLICAN MAJORITY NOW SAYS THAT THE COURTS CAN OVERTURN VOTING MAPS FOR BEING DRAWN TO FAVOR ONE PARTY OR ANOTHER WRAL CAPITOL BUREAU CHIEF LAURA LESLIE EXPLAINS EXACTLY HOW THAT DECISION WILL IMPACT YOU AND YOUR REPRESENTATION IN WASHINGTON. THE COURT AT THE TIME WAS CONTROLLED BY DEMOCRATS. 43. BUT LAST FALL, REPUBLICANS PICKED UP 2 SEATS AND WON CONTROL OF THE HIGH COURT 5 TO 2. THE NEW REPUBLICAN COURT TOOK THE UNUSUAL STEP OF AGREEING TO RECONSIDER THE EARLIER RULINGS AND NOW OVERTURNED THEM COMPLETELY SAYING THE FORMER COURT WAS WRONGED. CHIEF JUSTICE PAUL NEWBY WROTE IN THE MAJORITY OPINION THAT THE COURTS HAVE NO POWER UNDER THE CONSTITUTION TO INTERFERE WITH PARTISAN GERRYMANDERING. TODAY. WE BEGIN TO CORRECT COURSE. HE RODE RETURNING THE JUDICIARY TO ITS DESIGNATED LANE. DEMOCRATIC JUSTICE ANITA EARLS WRITING IN DISSENT SAID LETTING LAWMAKERS PREDETERMINE THE OUTCOME OF ELECTIONS UNDERMINES THE WHOLE IDEA OF DEMOCRACY IN A SINGLE BLOW. SHE WROTE THE MAJORITY STRIPS MILLIONS OF VOTERS OF THE STATE OF THEIR FUNDAMENTAL CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS THAT REALISTICALLY THIS GIVES THEM FREEDOM TO BE ABLE TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE. >> AS FAR AS THEY CAN, CATAWBA COLLEGE POLITICAL SCIENTIST MICHAEL BITZER SAID THE U.S. SUPREME COURT HAS ALSO REFUSED TO BLOCK GERRYMANDERING. SO THERE'S ESSENTIALLY NO CHECK OR BALANCE ON IT NOW, ESPECIALLY AT THE CONGRESSIONAL LEVEL. >> HE SAYS LAWMAKERS WILL SOON DRAW NEW MAPS LIKELY TO UNSEAT SEVERAL DEMOCRATS GIVING THE GOP A LARGER MAJORITY IN CONGRESS. WE'RE GOING TO SEE A SWING FROM THE 7, 7 CURRENT DELEGATION. >> TO A SUPER MAJORITY REPUBLICAN DELEGATION AS WELL AS LIKELY SEE SUPER-MAJORITY NUMBERS FOR BOTH THE STATE HOUSE AND THE STATE SENATE. >> YOU MIGHT REMEMBER THAT THIS CASE WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE U.S. SUPREME COURT LAST DECEMBER. I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilmeth in the WRL severe weather center. Not a bad day today, a little bit more cloud cover today compared to yesterday, but still warm outside 85 in Raleigh today, 84 for the high end Durum and 85 for the high temperature in Fayetteville, the daylight hours should stay dry today. We will have a slim chance for a shower later on this evening. A better chance after sunset. It's about a 20% chance starting around seven o'clock or so. We'll be in the low eighties through 7 p.m. and then we're in the upper seventies by 8 p.m. down to 76 degrees by nine o'clock tonight. The reason for the slightly better chance for rain is this cold front that's approaching western North Carolina, the western half of the state has the best chance for some rain today. And then as this front gets close to us, we'll have a slight chance for a couple of showers, maybe an isolated storm late this evening. And tonight, it's about a 30% chance. Same thing Wednesday, an isolated shower or storm, many of you will stay dry, but a couple of spotty showers and storms. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday look dry and then rain chances go up as we head into the weekend. Saturday, a 40 to 50% chance for some scattered storms and same on Sunday for the rest of the day. Today. We'll have partly to mostly cloudy skies. We should stay dry through the daylight hours and then around 9, 10 o'clock tonight, some hit and miss showers and storms will be around. And then Wednesday morning looks fairly quiet to kick off the day with partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. The coverage isn't great, but we can't rule out an isolated shower or storm, especially in our southern counties. But many of you will stay dry. Now, as we get to the weekend, we'll have more moisture in place. Another system moves through and we have a better chance for some rain. Saturday morning looks dry which is good for race for the cure. We do expect rain once we get to the afternoon, scattered showers and storms around in the afternoon and evening on Saturday. Same thing on Sunday. We'll start with a little bit of rain in the morning though as well. Some light rain in the morning and some scattered showers and storms possible in the afternoon and evening on Sunday. So turning unsettled for the weekend, temperatures stay very warm for the next several days with highs in the eighties for the next seven days are best rain chances a couple of spotty showers or storms tonight and Wednesday, but a better chance for some of those scattered showers and storms over the weekend.

A shooting on Monday in an east Charlotte neighborhood killed a deputy with the US Marshal Service and two officers with the NC Department of Corrections. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced a fourth officer died from their injuries on Monday night.

<p>Really good. All right. Thanks to everyone for being here. Um I'll come to you again with heavy heart uh to announce that Officer Joshua Iyer uh recently passed away as he succumbed to the injuries that he sustained this afternoon in the shooting. Um Officer Ire has been with C MP DS for six years. He was a graduate of the 178th recruit class. He's survived by his wife, Ashley, uh and his three year old son Andrew, um will always be indebted to Officer Ire for his bravery and his sacrifice for this profession. It was just last month. I was in this very room congratulating Officer Iron for becoming Officer of the month in April. And he certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens. And I ask that you will keep him and his family and all of the others that fell victim this afternoon, keep everyone in your prayers. And at this point, um I just wanted to announce that update on the case. Uh We're still actively investigating this. It's still gonna be AC MP D case. Uh I won't be taking any questions, but I do appreciate you all coming and have a good night.</p>

Authorities announce fourth officer death in Charlotte shooting

Numerous law enforcement officers have been struck by gunfire in an active situation on Monday afternoon in northeast Charlotte. The public is being urged to stay away from the area.
