RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina State Board of Education approved Thursday a 3-year, $49.7M contract with Dallas-based Voyager Sopris Learning to train educators on a new reading program.

The board also approved authorizing the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to pursue a $1.5 million contract with Apple for 3,110 iPad Minis. The iPads will got to school food authorities across the state and are designed to help keep more accurate meal counting.

The contract with Voyager Sopris Learning will implement part of state laws passed earlier this year for training pre-kindergarten teachers on how to properly teach reading and spelling via the new Science of Reading approach.

The board, per SL 2021-3, is required to contract with Voyager Sopris Learning, rather than conduct competitive bidding, for pre-kindergarten teacher training. But the contract approved Thursday also calls for Voyager Sopris Learning to provide training for K-5 teachers.

The board originally planned to vote on this contract two weeks ago during their regular August meeting but not all details had yet been finalized.
