RALEIGH, N.C. — It's the question many have wondered about this photo.

Who is the mystery woman walking away from the car fire? And who is she talking to?

Michelle Everest is the mystery woman. She lives in north Raleigh.

Everest was stuck on Glenwood Avenue Wednesday for over four hours, on her way home from Durham Technical Community College. She was talking to a friend when she saw a car up the hill catch fire.

Everest was walking toward it to help when she heard sirens behind her.

She turned around.

Click.

“So that's what I was doing,” she said. “I was walking back to the car and telling her I'm getting back to the car, make sure I'm not blocking anything.”

Another driver captured that moment. And it didn't take long before Everest was everywhere, including CNN, Reddit, Slate and Gawker.

She didn't know the picture went viral until Thursday morning.

“My friend called me out on Facebook and was joking around about it,” she said.

Everest hates having her picture taken, but is enjoying watching this one turn into a meme. Others have added everything from Godzilla to the Sta-Puf Marshmallow man – her favorite so far – to the original photo. View a slideshow.
Lindsay Webb, who took the picture, said she was just as surprised as Everest to see the picture go viral.

And yes, Webb says, the rest of the original photo is real, too.
