LORIS, S.C. — Anthony Spivey, the former Chadbourn police chief who was the subject of a search along the Lumber River this week, was arrested in South Carolina early Thursday morning.

The Horry County Police Department posted to Facebook that officers were tipped to his location. According to the Columbus County sheriff, Spivey was located at his aunt’s house in the Loris, S.C., area at approximately 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived, Spivey ran into some nearby woods, according to the police departments, but he was taken into custody shortly afterward.

Former Chadbourn police chief William Anthony Spivey was arrested in Horry County, S.C.

Spivey faces dozens of criminal charges connected to actions while he was Chadbourn's chief, including mishandling evidence, drug trafficking and embezzling. WECT reports Spivey is accused of repeatedly raiding the police department’s evidence room and stealing a variety of narcotics, thousands of dollars in cash and firearms.

After his ouster from the force, he was working for an auto body shop and was accused of stealing two catalytic converters.

Early this week, after Spivey's truck was found near the Lumber River, dive crews were deployed on the belief he might have gone missing in the river.

After his arrest in S.C., Spivey was being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
