NC physicians urge President Trump to cancel his rally
NC physicians urge President Trump to cancel his rally in Fayetteville as North Carolina coronavirus cases trend upward.
avoiding crowds in public and social gatherings in private. Failure to comply, the task force warned, will lead to preventable deaths. The president knows this. Yet here he is, repeating a reckless, risky event like a pack campaign rally. It's just a recipe for trouble. As physicians, we asked President Trump to put public health ahead of politics, prioritize people's safety and stop holding dangerous, crowded rallies in North Carolina. And I'd like to invite my colleague Dr George Bomb Flock, to say a few words. I'm a retired neurosurgeon. Uh, the Kobe pandemic has killed over 4000 North Carolinians and infected over a quarter million people in our state. Again again, physicians in North Carolina have asked President Trump to show leadership in this pandemic, we're still waiting. While President Trump continues to put people at risk of getting covert night team and endangering their lives with his rallies, he's still trying to take away their health care. He is suing Thio in protections for people with pre existing conditions. He rushed through a Supreme Court justice who signaled her hostility to the Affordable Care Act. North Carolinians deserve leaders who understand that during a deadly highly contagious pandemic. People need health care mawr than ever. They don't deserve politicians who threatened to take that safety net away. As President Trump and our Senator Thom Tillis want to do, Senator Tell us. Voted to confirm Judge Barrettes nomination to the Supreme Court even as most North Carolina voters said they wanted him to pass a pandemic relief package before voting to confirm it Tell us has failed to lead on a relief package that would help North Carolinians whether the economic after effects of the pain. Bennett. More than four million North Carolinians live with pre existing conditions, Senator tells US, voted four times to repeal the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with those pre existing conditions. Physicians have a duty to speak up on these issues because we took an oath to do no harm and to speak up when we see harm about the happen. Instead of holding these risky rallies, President Trump should do some actual work and give North Carolina and the country a science based pandemic response strategy. He should work with leaders in both parties to deliver Cove in 19 relief to North Carolina families and Senator tell us and other North Carolina politicians should distance themselves from the rally in Fayetteville so that North Carolinians could see what they put first. People's health or partisan politics. And then my colleague Dr Carl Fields, will say a few words. Hi, I'm Dr Carl Fields. I'm a practicing sports medicine physician. I'm working closely with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to try to get high school sports safely restarted in North Carolina. But we face major challenges. And from a medical and health perspective, President Trump has made these worse for North Carolina. His rallies were not just venues to spread Cove in 19 as my colleagues have said, but they're also platforms for outrageous and totally inaccurate medical information. President Trump spreads misinformation, as we've heard just recently, such as We're turning the corner and that the increase in cases is just an increase in testing. That doesn't explain why my hospital now has the most patients hospitalized with Kobe that they've had since the pandemic started with these falsehoods and these rallies he's holding, he undermines what we health professionals were trying to do is to get people to socially distance and to wear masks to help stop this outbreak. President Trump should cancel these rallies. And if you want to really help North Carolina in the few days remaining before the election, go home and help people get some relief from all the strains that have come with this pandemic. Had he started doing that in February, tens of thousands of people would likely still be alive. One recent analysis and epidemiologic analysis suggests that Trump's poor pandemic response likely lead toe over 130,000 excess deaths from this. And the United States clearly has more Kogan 19 cases than any country in the world, including places like China and India that have far larger populations. No mass, no social distancing, no coherent and cohesive message, and consistently mocking people who wear masks or take precautions. This is what the president did for nearly a year. The rally he had Thio announce, uh, Justice Barrett was a good example of that. It became a super spreader event and now covered 19 in our country is totally out of control, and we're struggling with this is health care physicians. President Trump also is making false claims that doctors and hospitals air inflating the Cove in 19 deaths. This really demeans us is healthcare workers. We're putting ourselves at some risk to be out there treating our patients, and we don't need this type of comment. Thio discourage what we're trying to do when he says that this virus is disappearing. Last week we had half million new cases and over 60,000 cases per day. So it's terrible that we've also seen over 225,000 people die in the nine months since the pandemic has started. So North Carolina is not asking for another campaign rally packed with lots of people standing close to close, not wearing masks. North Carolina is not asking for another platform to get health information from politicians rather than from doctors. What North Carolina is asking for is that our president go back and do something to help us solve some of problems that have come from this pandemic. Not hold more rallies in our state. Thank you very much. Thank you, Dr Fields. We'll now open it up for questions from the media. If you do have a question for any or all of the doctors, um, please feel free to chat the question. Or you can use the Q and A function. Or you can also raise your hand using that zoom function. And I continue to be able to verbally ask your question so we'll give it a few minutes for folks to be able to make sure that they get their questions. And okay, I did have a question. Chatted to me. Um, President Trump's adviser, Dr Scott Atlas, is calling for the slowing of Cove in 19 reporting. Do you agree with that? But I would like to take that question. Uh, i'll be happy. Thio. Doctor Atlas is neither an epidemiologist nor specialist in virus or infectious disease. He's a radiologist and actually, Doctor, um so I don't I don't put any credibility in anything he suggests. And I would refer to any opinions and recommendations by the Fauci and his associates. Um, it matters like this, and you know, this is simple question of honesty. We need to be honest with our people. But this is a big issue that came up is that Trump knew that this was a serious process back in February and March, and he hid that from the American people because he said it would cause panic or other things. We need to be honest with American people, trust them, let them make decisions that protect their own safety. Absolutely. We do have a couple of minutes for more questions if you do have any questions. In the meantime, uh, there is another question. With so many North Carolinians, depending on the A c A for healthcare via the marketplace or, you know, protections for pre existing conditions, what would it mean for North Carolina if the Supreme Court ruled the A C A unconstitutional well for North Carolina, as for the rest of the country, you would be devastating. There are millions of people who depend on those plans, and those would those would disappear. It also depends if if the whole A c A is ruled unconstitutional there. There are many other things that people don't realize that that will go away that they've for gotten. I mean, one that people are very aware of is the protection for people with pre existing conditions. But there are other things in the, like the coverage of young people up to the age of 26 and, um, there the A C a can. You contains numerous other things, like protection for breastfeeding. Mothers that people aren't really aware are all part of it. So if the a c a goes away, it will really be devastating. Absolutely. Thank you. Um, I am not seeing any other questions. Eso I will go ahead and wrap up the call. Thank you to all of the doctors for lending your expertise and taking time out of your mornings to make sure that, uh, North Carolinians have the the accurate information about the impact of these rallies and the overturning of the A C A. Thank you to all the media as well who have attended. I'm going to be typing my email address in the chat box. If you do have any questions that come up after the fact, I'm happy to help you get those answered. Um, but we appreciate your time as well again during this very busy week. Eso Thank you all. I hope you have a great rest of the day and I hope you all stay safe. Thank you. Thank you.
