NC metro areas split into multiple voting districts GOP lawmakers to limit influence of Democratic voters
For the second straight day, dozens of North Carolina resident complained about proposed legislative and congressional district maps drawn by Republican lawmakers, saying they're designed simply to keep the GOP in power without respect to the wishes of voters.
A SPOKESPERSON TELLS WRAL NEWS THEY SHOULD HAVE THE EXACT CAUSE OF DEATH BY TOMORROW. >>> STATE LAWMAKERS HAVE BEEN HEARING COMMENTS THIS WEEK ON THE NEW VOTING MAPS AND SO FAR THEY HAVE HEARD AN AWFUL LOT. >> THIS IS STRAIGHT UP B.S. YOU ALLOW THE PEOPLE TO COME HERE AND SPEAK, AND YOU CHOSE NOT TO DO WHAT THE PEOPLE WANTED. >> SO WHY ARE PEOPLE MORE UPSET NOW THAN THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST THREE DECADES? >> I THINK PEOPLE ARE PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO IT THAN THEY USED TO, BECAUSE MAYBE WE HAVE GIVEN IT MORE COVERAGE THAN WE USED TO. THEY ARE UPSET ABOUT THE CONGRESSIONAL MAPS IN PARTICULAR, BECAUSE THE CONGRESSIONAL MAP WAS GIVEN A TEN-FOUR ADVANTAGE AND THE STATE HOUSE MAP WOULD GET CLOSE. >> HAS ANYONE SPOKEN OUT IN FAVOR OF THE MAPS? >> Reporter: MAYBE TWO OR THREE, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 80 COMMENTATORS. TODAY EVEN THE REPUBLICANS WHO HAVE SPOKEN WERE CRITICAL OF THE MAPS. >> WE HAVE WONDERED ABOUT THE LEGALITY OF ALL THIS. WHERE MIGHT THIS STAND? >> Reporter: THEY CAN TRY TO PASS THIS. BUT THE STATE COURTS A COUPLE YEARS AGO SAID MAPS CANNOT BE SO PARTISAN THAT THEY DEPRIVE PEOPLE OF REPRESENTATION. THEY COULD UNVEIL A VERSION THAT'S A LITTLE LESS PARTISAN. >> DO YOU EXPECT FIREWORKS THIS AFTERNOON? >> Reporter: I THINK EVERYONE LOOKS A LITTLE FIRED. I THINK WE COULD SEE DIFFERENT MAPS NEXT WEEK.
