A Parkton man convicted of a dozen Cumberland County sexual assaults from a decade ago received a sentence of at least 23 years in prison.

Johnnie B. Green will spend up to 28 years behind bars.

Last week, Green pleaded guilty to charges of rape, sexual offense, kidnapping, burglary, breaking and entering and robbery. He was convicted of raping 12 women between 2009-2010 in Fayetteville and Hope Mills. On Thursday, he learned how much time he will serve.

Five of Green’s 12 victims spoke to the court on Thursday and statements were read from two others who couldn’t attend.

Green's victims have said he covered his face with a durag when he committed the assaults to conceal his identity. Authorities said he could not hide from the DNA left behind after each attack.

"When ... he got a match to a first-cousin once removed, we kind of had to back track and rebuild the family tree from that first cousin once removed," said former Fayetteville police case investigator John Somerindyke. "Then, we identified Green as a person of interest."

Green had a warrant for an outstanding felony. When his DNA was taken, it matched with rape kits taken from six victims.

On Thursday, seven of the victims were in court for Green's sentencing. They read statements and told him how he had emotionally shattered their lives.

One victim said she was on the phone with her mother when Green broke into her home, covered her mouth and raped her. The woman's mother heard the entire thing. Also, the woman's husband was a deployed Fort Bragg soldier who was called back home after the act.

Another victim said she lost trust of everyone. She said every man she looked at looked like Green.

Several women said that because they didn't know what Green looked like, they thought he was everywhere they went.

Another woman said she experienced panic attacks and had someone walk with her everywhere she went.

One woman said she thought Green would come back to rape her again. She said she has slept with her bedroom door barricaded for the past 10 years.

Another woman said her life was shattered into 1,000 pieces after she was raped.

Somerindyke said there's no statute of limitations on these types of crimes.

"It's now the suspects that are saying, 'Are the police following me? Are the police watching me? Are the police going to get me?'" Somerindyke said. "My answer to them is, 'Hell yeah, they are.'"

In addition to the time behind bars, the judge said when Green is released, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and be monitored by satellite for 10 years.
