NC Highway Patrol: 100 calls for help overnight, more than 50 crashes
Sgt. Michael Baker with the N.C. Highway Patrol said his troopers were busy overnight but not as overwhelmed as they were in previous storms. Since Isaias' effects mainly occurred between midnight and 5 a.m., most people stayed off the roads.
REPORTS OF DOWNED TREES.>>> IT CERTAINLY IS THE ROAD HAZARDS ARE MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR SOME PEOPLE TO TRAVEL NOW THAT DAYLIGHT IS UP. >> JUST ANOTHER PROBLEM LIKE THE HIGHWAY PATROL WHO WERE THERE, TRYING TO KEEP RINGS IN ORDER. SERGEANT MICHAEL BAKER IS JOINING US NOW. SERGEANT, WE'RE HAVING A LITTLE BIT OF REACTION FROM OVERNIGHT. NOW THAT IS DAYLIGHT AND MOVING FORWARD, WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CONCERN?>> THE CONCERN IS PEOPLE GETTING ONTO THE ROADWAYS AND NEEDING TO BE COGNIZANT OF DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES AND POTENTIAL ROADWAYS THAT ARE FLOODED. WE ARE ASKING MOTORISTS TO MONITOR THE WEATHER REPORTS. JUST UNDERSTAND THAT WE DID JUST HAVE AN IMPACT OF A TROPICAL STORM THAT HIT OUR STATE. >> SERGEANT BAKER, HOW BUSY WAS IT FOR YOUR TROOPERS? DID IT SEEM LIKE PEOPLE STATE OFF THE ROAD FOR THE MOST PART? >> WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT FOR THE MOST PART, PEOPLE HEATED THE GOVERNOR'S WARNING ABOUT STAYING OFF THE ROAD ON THE COASTAL PLAINS AS WELL AS THE TRIANGLE WE RESPONDED TO OVER 100 CALLS FOR SERVICE AND APPROXIMATELY 50 TO 60 MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS. A LOT OF THOSE WERE DEALING WITH DOWNED TREES. FOR THE MOST PART, PEOPLE STAYED HOME AND I'M SURE THAT WILL CHANGE THIS MORNING. WE'RE ASKING PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE SOME TREES DOWN ON THE ROADWAYS, THE DOT AND THE FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO MOVE THE TREES. BE COGNIZANT AND USE GOOD SPEEDING SCENARIOS WHENEVER YOU ARE GOING TO YOUR PLACE OF BUSINESS. >> WE HAD A POLICE OFFICER SAVED FROM OVERNIGHT, THAT JUST BECAUSE IT WAS SO DARK AND A TREE DOWN ON THE HUMUS RAN UP ON ONE. WHEN YOU GIVE US THE NUMBERS AND YOU TELL US WHAT YOU ARE INTO LAST NIGHT, AS FAR AS COVERAGE IS CONCERNED, WHAT WOULD A NORMAL NIGHT BE LIKE? IS THAT TWICE AS MANY CALLS AS YOU WOULD NORMALLY GET?>> I WOULD SAY JUST ABOVE NORMAL, NOTHING COMPARED TO PREVIOUS STORMS THAT WE HAVE SEEN OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. SO AGAIN, WITH THIS STORM COMING IN AND OUT AS FAST AS IT DID WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE MORE IMPACT IN SITUATIONS AND WE DID. >> WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND APPRECIATE IT, GOOD LUCK WITH THE DAY AHEAD.
