FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — As Florida residents gassed up for a possible hurricane evacuation, North Carolinians were eyeing prices at the pump to plan a Labor Day weekend getaway.

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gas is $2.37, according to AAA Carolinas. That's 23 cents less than Labor Day last year, and the cheapest Labor Day price in three years.

The price is almost 10 cents less than that average at some stations in Cumberland County – cheaper as you get further from Interstate 95, and drivers are are loving it.

Ken Eillis noticed the savings Thursday as he filled his tank.

“We’re actually leaving tomorrow to go up to Gatlinburg for a wedding, so this is going to help out," he said.
