NC DOT delays Glenwood Avenue upgrade
The state Department of Transportation has decided to delay planned work on the Glenwood Avenue interchange at the Beltline, sparing motorists the pain of having to navigate two separate projects on Interstate 440 at the same time.
Posted — UpdatedThe DOT plans on reconstructing the Glenwood Avenue and Beltline interchange along with redesigning the intersection on Glenwood at Blue Ridge and Lead Mine roads.
The agency also plans on replacing the Blue Ridge Road bridge over Crabtree Creek.
The total estimated cost is expected to top out just over $230 million, and transportation officials planned to award the contract this year.
But the DOT says it now needs that money for other projects.
State transportation officials say they plan to award the contract in 2025.
Under the agency's current timeline, the Glenwood/Beltline project would commence after the big I-440 widening project between Walnut Street and Wade Avenue.
That work is expected to start this year and take about four years.
