LEWISTON WOODVILLE, N.C. — A Bertie County deputy crashed his car on New Year's Eve while responding to a call and is now hospitalized, according to officials.
He was responding to a call at around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 307 near Lewiston Woodville when he drove around a curve, hit a shoulder, ran off the road then collided with a tree. Bad weather was a factor in the crash, according to officials.
His vehicle caught on fire after colliding with the tree, said Bertie County Sheriff John Holley.
A witness driving behind the deputy's car pulled over to help him out of the car, Holley said.
The extent of his injuries is unknown, WITN reports. The name of the injured deputy has not yet been released to the public.
