ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. — A North Carolina sheriff's deputy, accused of assault, was fired days after being sworn in for a job at a second sheriff's office.

Michael Hal Shaw II, 39, from Elizabethtown, worked as a deputy with the Bladen County Sheriff's Office last year before he resigned after allegations that he assaulted a man during an arrest.

Despite these allegations, Shaw was sworn in this week as a Columbus County Sheriff's Office auxiliary deputy.

However, on Friday, Interim Sheriff William Rogers told WECT News that "his services were no longer needed."
Shaw resigned from his position in Bladen County in October 2021 after the accusations, according to WECT. He was booked in the Brunswick County Detention Center and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

WECT reports that the charges against him are still pending.

An indictment from the Brunswick County District Attorneys Office says he assaulted the man after a high-speed chase on Oct. 8, 2021, using a flashlight.

Eddie Caldwell, vice president of the North Carolina Sheriff's Association, told WECT News that because the case against Shaw is ongoing, he is still able to hold a position in law enforcement.
