HOW WILL YOU APPLY THAT EXPERIENCE AND PERSPECTIVE IN YOUR NEW ROLE? >> I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEW ROLE. I GREW UP IN A FAMILY OF ENTREPRENEURS AND EDUCATORS. MY PARENTS STARTED A SMALL BUSINESS SCHOOL IN 1956 AND THE THEME WAS, AN ADEQUATE EDUCATION EQUALED OPPORTUNITY. AND I THINK THAT HOLDS WELL TODAY. WHILE I HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE BOTH IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR, I THINK THE KEY TO OUR COLLEGE SYSTEM IS THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE THE VEHICLE AND HAVE IN THE VEHICLE TO PROVIDE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS WHETHER A STUDENT IS COMING DIRECT FROM HIGH SCHOOL OR IT IS A WORKER THAT NEEDS TO BE RETRAINED OR HAS BEEN DISPLACED, THE NORTH CAROLINA COLLEGE SYSTEM DIVIDES THAT TYPE OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION FOR A DIVERSE SET OF STUDENTS ACROSS OUR STATE SO I AM JUST VERY EXCITED THAT I HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE BUT ALSO, JUST REALLY DEALING WITH THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM READY TO LEAD OUR STATE FORWARD. >> IN WHAT OTHER WAYS DO YOU SEE THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM HELPING IN THE ANOMIC RECOVERY AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MOVE THAT LONG? >> 1st AND FOREMOST, WE WILL ASSURE THAT WE HAVE ADEQUATE FUNDING. I HAVE ALREADY SPOKEN TO OUR STATE LEADERS, GOVERNOR COOPER, SPEAKER MORE. THEY UNDERSTAND AND SUPPORT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COLLEGE SYSTEM PROVIDING INITIAL EDUCATION FOR OUR YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AS WE MENTIONED EARLIER BUT ALSO VERY IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESS EXPANSION AND GROWTH AND BUSINESSES THAT WE RECRUIT TO THE STATE. THE NORTH CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM PROVIDES A STRONG PARTNER FOR NEW INDUSTRY COMING IN, BODIES THAT WERE FORCED DEVELOPMENT TRAINING AND THAT IS WHY THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM WHILE WE PLAYED IT VERY STRONG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION IN THE PAST, IN THE PRESENCE AND AS WE MOVE FORWARD, THE SYSTEM IS GOING TO BE VITALLY IMPORTANT TO SUSTAIN OUR ECONOMY AND HELP IT MOVE FORWARD. >> WHAT IS THE ONE AREA YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON RIGHT AWAY WHEN YOU START YOUR JOB NEXT MONTH? >> 1st AND FOREMOST, I AM TRYING TO DO THAT NOW. I APPROACHED JANUARY, MY INITIATIVE IS TO ENSURE WE HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE AND COHESIVE TEAM FROM THE OFFICE TO THE STRONG LEADERS AT THE LOCAL LEVEL WITH THE COOK COMMUNITY COLLEGES AT THE LOCAL LEVEL, OUR BUSINESS COMMUNITY.
