North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley shared thoughts her of the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Sunday.

Beasley talked about the impact Ginsburg has made on the United States.

Beasley met Justice Ginsburg three times and described one of the last conversations she had with Ginsburg.

"It was remarkable because we, in part, were talking about the last time, some years before, when she had come to North Carolina and she remembered that she was there for a celebration of women chief justices from across the nation, and she remembered at the time that there were 13 women serving as chief justices and when I told her that there were now 18 of us, she was just over the moon," recounted Beasley.

Since her death on Friday, there are talks about who will assume Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat.

"A lot of people believe there should be diversity in that seat. Both presidential candidates are talking about it. The former vice president [Joe] Biden has committed that if he is elected, that he will nominate an African American woman. President Trump has indicated he will elected a Latina," said Beasley.

As tributes have poured in for Ginsburg, Beasley wanted to remind others of the impact Ginsburg made in the 27 years she served in the Supreme Court.

"She certainly stood and fought hard for equal rights for women and equality and justice for all people. You see her as the second woman to serve on the nation's highest court, to know that she was the first Jewish woman to serve on the nation's highest court," said Beasley.

Ginsburg last visited North Carolina in 2019 for a lecture connected to Meredith College.
