NC chefs named James Beard finalists

The awards are often referred to as "The Oscars of Food," and the Triangle has a legacy of taking home honors.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A couple of local chefs have been named finalists for James Beard Foundation awards.
The annual awards are often referred to as "The Oscars of Food," and the Triangle has a legacy of taking home honors.

John Fleer of Rhubarb in Asheville was named a finalist for best chef in the southeast. The winner will be announced during a gala at Lyric Opera of Chicago in New York City on May 1.

Vivian Howard of the Chef and the Farmer in Kinston was named a finalist in the literary category for her book, Deep Run Roots.

Former News and Observer food writer Andrea Weigl was named a finalist in the journalism category for best local impact reporting.

Book award and journalism winners will be announced April 25.
