GREENSBORO, N.C. — A talented North Carolina A&T volleyball player died of complications from an aneurysm on Sunday, the N.C. A&T Department of Athletics said on Tuesday.

Fatimah Shabazz, 22, was one of the best volleyball players in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the athletics department said.

"The passing of Fatimah is a great loss to us all and will leave a hole in our hearts," said coach Hal Clifton. "She will never be forgotten and will be missed dearly."

Shabazz came to North Carolina from Cincinnati, Ohio. She led the MEAC in the most kills per set.

She had been at N.C. A&T since 2017, when she was redshirted.

The athletics department said she helped carry the team to win its first conference tournament championship, which mean the team advanced to the NCAA for the first time.

"I ask that you please continue to hold Fatimah, her mom and all of her family in your hearts, thoughts and prayers during this time of need," Clifton said.

Shabazz also won several individual awards for her work as an offensive player.

Her teammate Courteney Pitt said she was "the sweetest friend to me and so competitive on the court. I will always remember the joy she brought to me each and every day."
