Yale Classmate Accuses Kavanaugh of ‘Blatant Mischaracterization’ of His Drinking

A Yale classmate of Judge Brett Kavanaugh accused him Sunday of a “blatant mischaracterization” of his drinking while in college, saying he often saw Kavanaugh “staggering from alcohol consumption.” Chad Ludington said in a statement that the judge had been untruthful in testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee when he denied he had ever blacked out from drinking. Ludington said Kavanaugh often become “belligerent and aggressive” while intoxicated. Other former classmates have made similar claims. It is illegal to lie to Congress. But it was unclear whether the FBI would add Ludington’s accusations to the background investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.

Car Explosion Kills Three Men in Pennsylvania, Officials Say

Three men were killed after a car exploded Saturday night in Allentown, Pennsylvania, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents, authorities said. Officials were investigating what caused the explosion and interviewing witnesses, but they determined by Sunday that there was no threat to the community, Tony Alsleben, interim police chief, said at a news conference. Scott M. Grim, the Lehigh County coroner, said three men were killed in the explosion, which was reported around 9:30 p.m. Officials were working to confirm their identities, and autopsies were scheduled for Monday, he said. James B. Martin, the Lehigh County district attorney, said officials knew that a “criminal incident” occurred.

Shark Attacks a Teenager Diving for Lobsters Off the California Coast

A shark attacked a 13-year-old who was diving for lobsters at a beach in California early Saturday, leaving him with traumatic injuries to his torso, authorities said. The teenager, identified in an online fundraising site as Keane Hayes, was screaming when other lobster divers heard him and quickly came to his aid. Keane was in serious condition at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, a hospital spokesman said Sunday. Authorities believe the shark was 11 feet long but have not found it. Keane was expected to make a full recovery, the family said through a hospital spokesman, Carlos Delgado, on Sunday.

A Quiet Docket May Be Just the Right Medicine for the Supreme Court

In the shadow of a titanic confirmation fight, the Supreme Court returns to the bench Monday with a docket that offers an opportunity to lower the temperature. Blockbuster cases on social issues are missing from the calendar. Instead, the justices will face questions that may allow them to find ways to bridge ideological divides. But big cases are in the pipeline, including ones on gerrymandering, gay rights and immigration. Those cases will provide important clues about where the court is headed. The justices have agreed to hear a large number of appeals asking them to overturn precedents. The outcome could provide hints about the future of Roe v. Wade.

Hundreds of Migrant Children Quietly Moved to a Tent Camp on the Texas Border

In shelters from Kansas to New York, hundreds of migrant children have been roused in the middle of the night and loaded onto buses for a journey to their new home: a tent city in West Texas. Until now, most unauthorized children held by immigration authorities had been housed in private foster homes or shelters. They received schooling and regular visits with legal representatives. But in the tents in Tornillo, Texas, there is no school, and access to legal services is limited. These midnight voyages are playing out across the country, as the government struggles to find room for more than 13,000 detained migrant children.

Kellyanne Conway Says She Was a Victim of Sexual Assault

Kellyanne Conway, an adviser to President Donald Trump, said Sunday that she was a victim of sexual assault and that the Supreme Court confirmation proceedings of Judge Brett Kavanaugh should not become a broader “meeting” of the #MeToo movement, suggesting that victims hold their assailants directly accountable. Conway made the revelation on CNN, largely deriding the “partisan politics” of Kavanaugh’s hearing. Many have seen Christine Blasey Ford's testimony as a rallying cry for survivors of sexual abuse. Conway pushed back against that. “I’m a victim of sexual assault,” she said. “I don’t expect Judge Kavanaugh or ... anybody to be held responsible for that. You have to be responsible for your own conduct.”
