KINSTON, N.C. — A rescue team from the 449th Theater Aviation Brigade, North Carolina Army National Guard, flew over Lenoir County Saturday morning in a search-and-rescue mission as floodwaters continued to rise in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.

Guardsmen used an infrared camera that detects body heat to locate people stranded by riding water and relayed those locations to another helicopter crew equipped with a hoist that can lift people to safety.

Elsewhere in Onslow County, a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City pulled multiple people from the flood waters. Divers descended from the helicopter, pulled people to safety and strapped them to stretchers and secured them into the air.
