NASHVILLE, N.C. — Nash-Rocky Mount Schools didn't have to go far to find its next superintendent.

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education said Dr. Steve Ellis will be the next superintendent. He will take office on March 1. Ellis has served since 2016 as the special assistant to the superintendent for Wilson County Schools in Wilson.

"My family and I are excited about serving the staff, students and community of the Nash-Rocky Mount School District," Ellis said in a press release Tuesday. "I am looking forward to getting started. I also would like to thank the school board for this opportunity.

"My goal is to be a part of the change in molding the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools into one of the highest performing school districts in the state."

Before his current duties in Wilson, Ellis served as the executive assistant for student services for two years and as a middle school and high school principal for twelve years. He also currently serves as an adjunct professor at Barton College in Wilson. Ellis began his career in public education as a middle school social studies teacher.

Ellis received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Barton College. He went on to earn a master’s degree in educational administration from East Carolina University in Greenville and a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
