DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University announced Thursday the receipt of a $1 million planned gift from class of ‘77 graduate George R. Hamilton and his wife, Jill.

Hamilton is president and general manager of Dow Coatings, a Dow Chemical company, located in Michigan.

The George R. Hamilton Endowment Fund will offer support in equal measure to the operations and scholarships of the NCCU School of Business and Department of Athletics, the school announced.

“My experience at NCCU was a key enabler of my success,” Hamilton said.

He struggled financially throughout college as he worked a succession of part-time jobs and sought loans to pay for his business degree at NCCU. He said he hopes to make life a little easier for some of those who will follow in his footsteps at the School of Business.

Hamilton’s reasoning behind his gift to the Department of Athletics was more strategic.

“Football and athletics help to build the brand of the university, which attracts more financial support,” he said.
