JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — On the hottest February day on record, the North Carolina State Forest Service was concerned about fires Thursday, and for good reason.

A fast-spreading brush fire raced through an acre and a half of woodland in Johnston County Thursday afternoon.

The flames came just feet away from a home and just inches from the owner's dog.

Valentina Aguilar, the owner of the home and the dog, and her husband spent the day putting out what was left of the fire.

"My neighbor called me and said your house is on fire. You have to get here now," Aguilar said.

Fire crews saw the dog covered in smoke and rescued the dog.

“They got to him ... before they even got to the fire they got him safe," Aguilar said. "They moved him to the other side of the house and he was safe.”

With the state currently in wildfire season, the fire chief said the low humidity and high winds made it much more difficult to contain.

Aguilar was asked to keep her kids away until the smoke cleared.

“Until now, I’m still here. I have to keep an eye on the flames that are coming up," Aguilar said.

The State Forest Service said crews were able to form a ring around the property to avoid the fire from spreading.

Aguilar, however, is worried that it’s just a matter of time before it sparks again.

“We are under the risk of another fire just because of the wind and it’s so dry,” Aguilar said.

There is currently no burn ban in place, but officials are asking resident to be careful and to avoid burning right now.
