DURHAM, N.C. — The Museum of Life and Science recently welcomed a new inhabitant — the museum's first mink. And he has a name! It's Milton.
According to the Durham museum's blog, Our Wild Neighbors, a wildlife rehabilitation facility in Hillsborough, rescued Milton on New Year's Day. He appeared to have been hit by the car, but, according to veterinarians, had no broken bones. Still, after five weeks of rest, he was still having trouble moving and eating on his own, so he wasn't safe to return to the wild.

Milton now lives in the museum's Carolina Wildlife exhibit, taking over the home once occupied by its beloved barred owl, Good Eye, who recently died. This month, more than 1,100 people participated in a contest to name the little guy.

According to the museum, minks are native to North Carolina, but aren't seen often because they live a nocturnal, solitary and secretive life. Milton has gotten comfortable in his new home. When he first arrived, he acquired a taste for warm salmon, which appears to be his favorite food, the museum tells me.

The museum is open to visitors who must purchase tickets in advance. More information is on the museum's website.
