The Museum of Life and Science along with the UNC TEACCH Autism Program is teaming up to offer Autism Awareness Day, a sensory friendly day at the Durham museum.

It runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, and is free with admission, which is $18 for adults and $13 for kids ages 3 to 12. On Sunday, museum exhibits and experiences will cater to families with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The museum's website says it will be a "lights up, sounds down" atmosphere.

Here's what's planned:

  • Sensory friendly train rides all day long
  • Hands-on demonstrations in The Lab with local organizations onsite with resources for those with ASD.
  • Cool-down areas and materials, along with visual supports, which can make visits more enjoyable for some.
  • Art on the Spectrum exhibit in the second floor gallery.

Other resources for families with autism

For those on the spectrum, the museum offers a variety of social narratives, visual schedules, activity systems and visual supports to help families during a visit to the museum on Sunday and everyday. You can find those on the museum's accessibility page.
