CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Two of five people shot and killed this year in Chapel Hill have been shot at the same housing complex: University Gardens Condominiums.

It's less than a mile from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

On Tuesday night, three more people were shot there. Two were injured and one died: Michael Lee, age 51. It was the second time in just four weeks that someone was shot and killed at the complex.

Some residents of the University Gardens told WRAL News they'd like to move away, but they can't.

They say the units are affordable, and that is hard to find anywhere else. They are hoping they can feel safe here again.

In the 24 hours after Lee's death, no arrests had been made.

"It’s crushing to our society to think that it’s not safe, especially in a place like this," said Terence Austin, who lives at the complex.

Chapel Hill Police have investigated five gun deaths in the town this year, two of those, including Lee, happened at University Gardens. Of three people injured in shootings this year, two were at the complex – both on Tuesday night.

"There's major safety concerns. People were getting out of their cars from work. People were walking dogs," said Austin.

WRAL News talked to one mother who asked us not to identify her out of concerns for her safety.

"Our children had just been outside, taking trash out after dinner," she said.

She says the complex is in the process of getting a new management company, so it has been difficult figuring out where to direct her concerns. She wants to see more lighting and more security cameras.

"There are a lot of children in this neighborhood. They can’t even go outside to play basketball now," she said.

Chapel Hill Police have not released details about what prompted the shooting.

The department says it does not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.
