DURHAM, N.C. — At least two cars were hit by bullets on a busy Durham road this afternoon.

The shooting happened at the intersection of Fayetteville Street and Cornwallis Road.

John Gilliam was driving through the area with his two kids in the car – only three and six years old.

One bullet punctured his tire. A nearby red car sustained even more damage, with at least three gunshots visible in the back of the car and shattered glass everywhere.

The red car had bullet holes and a shattered back windshield.

Gilliam said he heard five gunshots.

He kept driving to get away from the scene, but was only able to make it about half a mile, and then realized he had a flat tire and had to pull over.

He said the experience was especially terrifying since his kids were in the car, and he's grateful they are safe.

"You feel powerless," said Gilliam. "You're literally doing an every day activity, and an event occurs that you can't prevent, that you have no control over – and no matter what you do you cant protect your children."

Gilliam said the bullet entered the car three feet from him – and six feet from his children.

Gilliam said he's only lived in Durham about a year and a half. He said despite this, he finds the city to be a wonderful place to live.

He wants to live here the rest of his life, so he is not letting this change his perception of the city.

Durham police are still on the scene trying to sort everything out. They believe two cars were shooting at each other, and the other cars happened to get stuck in the crossfire.

One man, who had been shot in the arm, showed up at the hospital and is expected to be okay according to police.
