RALEIGH, N.C. — A multi-vehicle crash involving tractor trailers closed the two right lanes of Interstate 40 West on Tuesday, creating delays up to an hour between Garner and Raleigh.

The crash was reported around 6 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-40 near Exit 301 for Interstate 440.

Delays as long as 54 minutes were reported between N.C. Highway 42 in Johnston County and I-440 in Raleigh.

At 7:45 a.m., lanes were reopening, but heavy congestion remained.

At least five vehicles were involved, including a blue sedan, a white pickup truck and two tractor-trailers.

"It's just a large, large cleanup," said WRAL's Michael Grace, who was at the scene.

WRAL's Brian Shrader said crashes in the Garner area complicate detour routes.

Drivers headed into Raleigh can take N.C. 42 to Old Stage Road then reacess I-40 or stay on I-40, anticipating heavy delays.
