WENDELL — A large mulch pile covering more than an acre caught fire at the Shotwell Landfill in Wendell Saturday.

Firefighters blamed the dry weather. They said the mulch piles, which were as high as 20 feet, heated up and burned.

Eight fire units responded to the scene, and it took them more than two hours to extinguish the fire. The owner of the landfill plans to spread out the mulch to make sure it doesn't ignite again.
