CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed Sunday after he collided with another vehicle, prompting authorities to shut a stretch of Franklin Street while police investigated the fiery wreck.

The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m at West Franklin and Mallette streets, authorities said. Jacob Rudd, 18, of Morrisville, died at the scene.

Witnesses said the vehicles burst into flames during the impact of the collision.

Paramedics performed CPR on Rudd but were unable to revive him. It was not immediately clear if charges would be filed in connection with the accident.

"We’d like to thank everyone who jumped in to help immediately following the crash,” Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue said on Monday. “Brave individuals assisted the people involved, including administering CPR and first aid. Many people remained on scene until they were able to provide eyewitness accounts to officers. And businesses in the area provided food and water for first responders who were on the scene for multiple hours in the heat of the day.”

If anyone needs emotional support after witnessing the crash, the Chapel Hill Police Department’s Crisis Unit is available at 919-968-2806.
