CLAYTON, N.C. — An accident involving two vehicles and a motorcycle resulted in the death of a motorcyclist on Wednesday.

A State Highway Patrol trooper confirmed to WRAL's John Payne the accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday near the Neuse River Bridge on Covered Bridge Road near Clayton. Officials said a preliminary investigation indicated the motorcyclist attempted to pass in a no-passing zone near the Neuse River Bridge and collided head-on with an oncoming car.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. The driver of the car which was struck was taken to WakeMed. Their condition was unknown. A third driver was not injured.

Covered Bridge Road was shut down as the Highway Patrol investigated. WRAL's Rosalia Fodera was live near the scene of the accident and said the road was opened before 10 p.m.
