BENSON, N.C. — The driver of a motorcycle was killed in an accident on Interstate 40 East in Johnston County on Saturday evening.

Dale Hood, 40, of King, was driving his 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle following another vehicle in the left lane, the state Highway Patrol said. He switched lanes in an attempt to pass on the right near mile marker 320.

The motorcycle clipped a vehicle in the right lane and then struck the vehicle in the left lane that Hood was attempting to overtake, troopers said.

He and his passsenger, Sandy Hood, were ejected from the motorcycle. Troopers said Dale Hood died at the scene, but Sandy Hood, his wife, sustained only minor injuries.

The other vehicles pulled over on the shoulder of the interstate, and none of their occupants were injured.

Troopers said the cause of the accident was driver error by Hood. They do not plan to file charges against the other drivers.
