CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The mother of a UNC student who was sexually assaulted by a stranger in his dorm is calling on University administration to enhance safety.

Over the weekend, she sent a list of demands to the UNC administration.

That includes installing cameras at residence halls like the one where her son was sexually assaulted in October.

She believes UNC leaders have not been that receptive to her requests, but she said fellow parents are taking up the fight alongside her.

At Carmichael dorm on Oct. 22, a UNC student was followed into the building and sexually assaulted.

That student's mom told WRAL her son wants the horrific incident to prevent future tragedies.

And while he is not ready to speak out just yet, she is helping to speak for both of them.

She asked WRAL not to use her name, to respect her son's privacy.

"I’ve always called him a gentle giant," the mother said. "He has a huge heart. He’s always been concerned about other people."

That concern for others is what motivated a list of demands of the UNC administration that she sent over the weekend.

Those demands are:

  • Hire a third party to review safety on campus
  • Fix doors to dorms that “don’t close securely on a regular basis” and create only one primary entrance to each
  • Install cameras at those entrances
  • Notify students in a timely manner when something like a sexual assault occurs

"I’m not litigious but you know if that’s what it’s going to take to get their you know attention then that’s not off the table," she said.

Her hope is for safety improvements and for dialogue. She wants a meeting with UNC administrators.

"I am determined, and I’m not going to stop talking about it. If it’s a test of endurance, I know that I’m not going to stop."

When I talked to that mom this morning, she said she had not gotten any response regarding her demands from the UNC administration.

Later Tuesday, the mother did get a brief note from the vice chancellor saying they take her concerns and suggestions seriously.
