WILSON, N.C. — The mother of a 5-year-old Wilson boy shot and killed outside his home two years ago is calling for anyone accused of killing of a child to automatically face the death penalty.

Cannon Hinnant's mother, Bonny Parker, said she plans to meet with a state lawmaker next month to create a bill in her son's name.

"I’ll never get Cannon back, but I want this to be an eye-opener for everybody else in the world whose lost a child to an act of violence," Parker said. "They automatically should get death penalty, anybody who hurts a child."

The man accused of shooting Hinnant on his bicycle, Darius Sessoms, the boy's neighbor, is facing a death penalty case.

Sessoms made his first appearance in court on Wednesday, where his lawyer asked for more time to review all the evidence in the case. According to state law, death penalty cases require two appointed lawyers. The second lawyer has not had enough time to review Sessoms' case, according to his legal team.

"I feel like when trial starts is when reality will hit that he’s gone," Parker said.

Parker has been vocal about her support for Sessoms to receive the death penalty, saying that she does not feel as if justice will be done unless he is put to death by the state.

The judge agreed to give Sessoms' attorneys more time to review evidence.

Sessoms is due back in court on Aug. 10, which is exactly two years and one day after Hinnant's death.
