SANFORD, N.C. — The bodies of a mother and her teenage daughter were found inside a burning apartment in Sanford Monday afternoon, the Sanford Fire Department said.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at 916 Clark Circle at about 1:26 p.m. The apartment sustained smoke and minor fire damage, Sanford Battalion Chief Scott Knuth said.

The two women were found while the fire was being extinguished, Knuth said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the cause of the fire and the women's deaths.

Neighbors described the pair, whose names were not immediately released, as kind and who kept to themselves.

"The kids were always smiling, laughing," neighbor Kayla Alston said. "To us, it's just like, what happened? What did we miss? It's a hurtful time because nobody, none of us out here expected that."
