Virginia Guadalupe Reyes, 23, of Goldsboro, died in the accident, which involved a passenger vehicle and a dump truck.
According to authorities, Reyes was driving north on Thanksgiving Fire Department Road, while the dump truck was driving east on Highway 42, when the two collided. Officials say they believe Reyes did not stop at a stop sign.
"The dump truck went over top of the car," Thanksgiving Fire Chief Paul Zais said.
Police say a 2-month-old baby was in the backseat of the car and is now at WakeMed. They also say a bystander applied CPR to the baby for about a minute.
"The baby was in the car seat, under a lot of debris in the car," Zais said of the accident scene.
According to officials, the baby is in critical condition with a "50/50 chance to live."
This particular intersection has been the site of many fatalities over the years.
"The 42 Highway is very busy for us, we get numerous calls throughout the day and year," Zais said. "It's just a busy road."
The dump truck driver is hospitalized with injuries but is expected to be OK.
