MORRISVILLE, N.C. — The tragedy that unfolded at a Florida high school Wednesday afternoon has affected the entire country, including people in the Triangle.

Morrisville Police Chief Patrice Andrews said that, when things don't seem right, we all have a duty to report it because you never know if the piece of information may be the key to preventing a tragedy.

On Thursday morning, President Donald Trump took to Twitter, saying that there were so many signs the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed. He went on to say that people "must always report such instances to authorities, again and again."

Not too long after, Andrews quoted the tweet, saying she agreed. She also went on to say turning a blind eye is much like being complicit.

"For me, it was important, as a law enforcement official, not to place blame here but to make people think. That's a part of my responsibility," she said.

Andrews says it often takes more than one report to investigate or open up a case.

"We just can't jump into getting a search warrant for someone's home because of one tip," she said.

Regardless, she said it is important for as many people as possible to speak up.

"When you know something, it's so important because you never know when your tip might be the one," Andrews said.

Andrews said her department has software that helps them identify where threats come from. She also alerts the local school system, sheriff's department and federal authorities.

"Not all events can be prevented, but gosh, I sure would like to see which ones we could have, which future ones that maybe in the making we can prevent by joining together," she said.

Andrews said it is important to have conversations with children about speaking up and making sure that they are comfortable sharing information when they have it.

She also said it is time for a change when it comes to gun control.
