DURHAM, N.C. — Durham City leaders will hold a public hearing on Monday to discuss providing more affordable housing in the Bull City.

Advocates say housing is affordable when it comprises no more than 30 percent of a family's budget, including utilities.

The North Carolina Housing Coalition says 33 percent or roughly 39,000 households in Durham County are paying more than they can afford. City leaders are looking at changes that might motivate developers and landlords to make housing units around planned rail transit stations cheaper.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in Durham's city council chambers.
