CARY, N.C. — More than 150 long-term care facilities are reporting ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, state data revealed on Friday.

Eight of those outbreaks are in nursing homes in Wake County and four are among residential care facilities. The most recent outbreak was reported in Cary, at the Glenaire Healthcare Center Skilled Nursing Facility. The Glenaire facility has already reported three other COVID-19 outbreaks since the pandemic began, state officials said.

Forty more outbreaks in long-term care facilities were confirmed this week compared to last week, according to WRAL Data Trackers.

On top of these outbreaks, North Carolina is nearing record-high hospitalizations — more than 3,000 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 on Friday, which is the highest number seen since late January.

About a quarter of all people hospitalized are in the Intensive Care Unit. In the past month, the number of people hospitalized with the virus rose by 350%.

The majority of cases reported in the state are among people 25 to 49, state data shows. That age group is also one of the least likely to be vaccinated against the coronavirus
