Moped driver pulled beneath tractor trailer in fatal crash, closing NC-39 in Johnston County

Both directions of NC-39 in Johnston County near Earpsboro Road were closed down Thursday afternoon after a fatal crash between a moped and a dump truck.

ZEBULON, N.C. — Both directions of NC-39 in Johnston County near Earpsboro Road were closed down Thursday afternoon after a fatal crash between a moped and a tractor trailer.

According to state troopers, the moped driver was heading down Earpsboro Road and failed to yield at a stop sign. He hit the trailer portion of a tractor trailer and was pulled under the back tires.

The black moped was broken into multiple pieces, and debris was strewn across 30 or 40 feet of the highway. Yellow tape surrounded the entire intersection, where multiple police vehicles, state troopers and first responders were gathered.

A black tarp was evident alongside the scene of the crash.

The crash is having a major impact on traffic in Johnston County, with the entire intersection blocked. People driving home through the area are advised to take Highway 96.

Officials have not yet said if there will be any charges, and they have not yet released the name of the moped driver.
