ABERDEEN, N.C. — A woman who vehemently and repeatedly protested a drag show scheduled in Southern Pines claims that deputies questioned her in regard to the mass power outages in the county, after she posted on social media that she knows why the outage happened.

Emily Grace Rainey, a former U.S. Army psychological operations officer, made several posts about it on social media, even saying in one post: “The power is out in Moore County and I know why."

Before the show, Rainey posted on Facebook the contact information of the sponsors, imploring others to voice their opinions, saying, "You know what to do."

Rainey claims to be the head of the Moore County Citizens for Freedom (MCCF). The group is a "nonpartisan network of Moore County Citizens dedicated to the promotion of conservative values in Moore County, NC, through education and activism," according to its Facebook page.

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields told WRAL News that the outage was being investigated as a "criminal occurrence," but he did not say specifically what was done to damage the substations or whether the sheriff's office has connected that vandalism to the drag show or any suspects.

Rainey posted that she told deputies, "God works in mysterious ways ... I used the opportunity to tell them about the immoral drag show and the blasphemies screamed by its supporters.”

After the power went out, Rainey posted a picture of the marquee where the drag show was scheduled to take place, claiming that God was "chastising Moore County."

During Sunday's press conference Sheriff Fields said Rainey's posts were "false", and while they did speak with her they determined her social posts to be not credible; Fields also reiterated the importance of not making false posts during times of emergency.

Duke Energy showed almost 40,000 customers without power Sunday morning, when outdoor temperatures dipped to 40 degrees.

A State of Emergency is in effect in Moore County after a massive power outage caused by damage to substations by firearms.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, Rainey made news for taking down yellow tape around swings and slides at a closed playground in Southern Pines so her children could play. Southern Pines police charged her with injury to personal property.
In 2021, Rainey was investigated by the Army for leading a group of people from North Carolina to the rally in Washington that led up to the deadly riot in the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump.

She resigned her commission as an officer in the United States Army in October of 2021, after being in hot water for her political activity.
