Heat index expected to pass 100 degrees next two days, afternoon storms possible later this week

Monday is expected to have a heat index of 103, and Tuesday is going to have a heat index of 105. There is not a head advisory in effect for Monday or Tuesday, but it's something to watch out for according to WRAL meteorologist Zach Maloch.

There's a small cold front that will move in that will give central North Carolina some relief from the heat.

On Wednesday, the heat index will drop back to 98, and on Thursday, it will be at 97.

Stray showers and storms are possible late Monday afternoon. Scattered storms are again possible on Tuesday, but some of those storms could be on the strong to severe side. The storms could potentially bring moderate to heavy rain and damaging wind, according to Maloch.

There is not any severe risk as of Sunday night for those storms on Tuesday.

Looking forward at July 31 to Aug. 4, the region is going to have below-normal temperatures.

Hurricane Hanna is now a tropical depression. On Saturday, Hurricane Hanna made landfall twice in the Padre Island area of Texas with maximum winds of 90 mph as a Category 1 storm.

Another system in the central Atlantic Ocean could become Isaias sometime soon. It is not expected to impact the United States anytime soon, but forecasters will keep an eye on it for the next week. Maloch says forecasters have given it a high chance of developing over the next two-to-four days.

"It's likely to be our next named system," WRAL meteorologist Zach Maloch said. "This system is something we'll be tracking over the next week to week and a half."

The storm that was named Gonzalo has broken up not far from the Windward Islands and wasn't expected to be of further impact.
