Shakita Williams, 26, of 132 Norlina Pines Drive, set the car seat down in front of her Ford Explorer while she put two older children into the SUV at about 7:30 a.m., Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams said.
She then ran back into her apartment to see if she had forgotten anything inside before getting back into the vehicle, he said.
As the Explorer pulled forward, Shakita Williams told investigators, she felt like the SUV hit something, so she backed up a bit and climbed out to see what it was.
She then saw the baby in the car seat under the vehicle, the sheriff said.
A frantic Shakita Williams told a 911 dispatcher that she had thrown bags of trash into the back of the SUV to drop off at a nearby bin. She was trying to get to work on time and forgot that she hadn't loaded the baby into the vehicle.
"I didn't mean it. I'm so sorry. I didn’t mean it," she sobbed in the call.
The baby, who is almost 3 months old, was breathing and conscious, she told the dispatcher. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Duke University Hospital.
Charges are pending, the sheriff said.
