RALEIGH, N.C. — Stand-up comedian and author Jen Fulwiler had six children within an eight year span. None of them twins.

"Those were some hard times," Fulwiler said. "For a decade of my life, I had three kids in diapers at once."

The oldest is now 16 years old and the youngest is 8.

Fulwiler, who will be performing at Raleigh Improv on Sept. 23, refers to herself as a "slob" who doesn't have the "temperament" for parenting.

"I'm not good at keeping my house clean and I'm very sensitive to loud noises, so I don't have the type of temperament that you would think would be set up for that, which is why I ended up in comedy," Fulwiler said. "Let me just tell you, the jokes write themselves."

Fulwiler's brand of parenting humor is on full display on social media, especially Instagram and TikTok where she jokes about mom life. She has even had some of her videos go viral.

"A lot of my jokes are about just living in the suburbs, trying to make it all work when it does not work," she said.

For the Austin, Texas, native, stand-up is a chance to commiserate with fellow moms and tap into her natural storyteller roots.

"After these shows so many people come up to me and they say, 'Jen, you know, I feel so much less alone. I thought I was the only one who had that problem, who had that insecurity. And now I know that you've been through that too, and I just feel so much less alone,'" Fulwiler said.

Fulwiler brings her "Mini-Van Fabulous" tour to Raleigh Improv to Cary on Sept. 23. Tickets are still available.
