Mississippi man charged with shooting off-duty Fayetteville police officer
A man was charged Wednesday night in connection with the Monday night shooting of an off-duty Fayetteville police officer in Sampson County.
Posted — UpdatedJoseph Edwards, 63, of Mississippi, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflict serious injury.
The off-duty officer, who has not been identified, was at his home in rural Sampson County home with his wife and children when someone knocked on the front door, Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton said. When the officer opened the door, he was shot.
He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville for treatment, but his condition remains unknown.
A short time later, deputies confronted Edwards sitting in a truck with a camper attached in the middle of the road near the intersection of Dunn and Minnie Hall roads near Roseboro. A tense standoff ensued in which deputies and State Highway Patrol troopers tried to persuade Edwards to get out of the truck.
Tear gas was fired into the truck, but Edwards still didn't come out.
Authorities said Edwards tried to run over a group of deputies and troopers, so they opened fire on him.
Edwards was shot several times, and bullet holes riddles the windshield of his truck. His camper wound up in a ditch.
Edwards was taken to Wake Medical Center following the incident. He was being held under $1 million bond at Sampson County Jail Wednesday night.
