Halifax, N.C. — A missing Halifax County woman, believed to have been held against her will, was found unharmed in Philadelphia, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday. A man with her was arrested.
Cathy Denise Carter, 35, left home on May 1 and stopped reporting to her workplace, where her mother and sister also work, officials said.
Family members said they believed Carter was with Grady Jefferson Jr., 40. Sheriff’s officials received a tip that Jefferson was staying in the Philadelphia area.
Philadelphia authorities found the two at a residence and arrested Jefferson on a North Carolina charge that he had failed to register as a sex offender.
Jefferson was awaiting extradition on the non-registration charge.
