CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — One-by-one, families are releasing the names of the service members killed in the deadly bombing in Afghanistan.

So far, none of the deaths are from our military installations in North Carolina.

In communities like the one around Camp Lejeune, people are waiting for the next update.

The hard part is the waiting. But the people here are not waiting to honor those who lost their lives.

We've learned 700 marines are headed to Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia to help with temporary housing in Afghanistan.

Tributes have been coming in. A moment of silence took place at noon on Friday at the Freedom Fountain in Jacksonville. The moment honored Marines and the Sailor killed in Kabul during the moment of silence.

The Onslow Civic Affairs Committee placed a wreath at the fountain, which is dedicated to all those who pass through Onslow County in service to their Nation.

A retired marine, Raquel Painter, expressed her hurt.

“You never know if something is going to happen, whether it is a terrorist attack or another tragic incident,” Painter said.

The attention is now turning toward supporting those families who lost loved ones.

Two suicide bombers and gunman attacked crowds of Afghans trying to flee the country in Kabul's airport on Thursday, killing 13 U.S. troops, officials said. Eighteen service members were wounded, and officials said that number could grow. More than 140 Afghans were wounded, an Afghan official said.

In an impassioned speech on Thursday, President Joe Biden said these deaths would not drive the U.S. out of Afghanistan earlier than scheduled, and he has instructed the U.S. military to develop plans to strike the Islamic State.
